What goes under your shingles
A roof is six layers, not one.
Scroll to watch a typical asphalt shingle roof go on, layer by layer from the deck up. Most of it ends up under the shingles, where you never see it.
The solid base over the rafters. Soft or damaged decking gets replaced, so the new roof sits on something solid.
Metal edging along the eaves and rakes that carries water off the roof edge and into the eavestrough.
A self-sealing membrane along the eaves, where melting snow and ice dams hit a roof first.
A layer over the rest of the deck that backs up the shingles if water ever gets past them.
A starter strip at the eave, then every course laid from the eave up, each row overlapping the one below.
Vents along the peak let warm, moist air out of the attic, and cap shingles close the ridge.
